NHTSA Allows Electronic Tire Registration The government's ability to accurately notify motorists of a potential tire-safety issue will be enhanced now that federal law will allow for a choice of how consumers can register newly purchased tires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently approved a request by a tire manufacturers organization to allow consumers to register tires electronically. Prior to the new ruling, federal regulations allowed tire registration only through the use of an index card presented to consumers at the point of purchase. Tire retailers must provide consumers with the appropriate tire size, type and tire identification number of the tires that were purchased.
