Cabinet Member Turns Down Alliance Tommy Thompson, secretary of the federal Dept. of Health and Human Services, won't be leaving this fall to become CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers after all. Thompson, formerly governor of Wisconsin, had signaled his interest in the $1 million-per-year job. But he deferred to President Bush's request that he stay with the administration through the 2004 elections. The decision is a major setback for the four-year-old alliance, which decided in February it wanted to step up its lobbying activities by replacing CEO Josephine Cooper with a higher-profile person.
